Welding is extensively used in manufacturing across energy, chemical, petrochemical, oil and gas, and construction sectors. The ISO 3834 series establishes Quality Requirements for Fusion Welding of Metallic Materials — covering the management of welding as a special process where quality cannot be fully verified by final inspection alone.

Why welding management matters

The quality of the weld and/or welded joint is obtained through the execution of validated welding processes systematically implemented by a company. Quality control alone cannot compensate for poor welding processes — prevention through proper management is essential.

Standards in the series

The framework includes four core standards with increasing requirements: ISO 3834-1:2021 (selection criteria), ISO 3834-2:2021 (comprehensive requirements), ISO 3834-3:2021 (standard requirements) and ISO 3834-4:2021 (elementary requirements). Plus ISO/TR 3834-6:2012 as an application guide.

Why it's often referenced

Regulatory mandates reference these standards. For example, EN 12952-5 requires manufacturers to meet ISO 3834-2 for water tube boilers, while EN 13445 mandates at least ISO 3834-3 compliance for pressure vessels. ISO 9001 designates welding as a special process requiring documented procedures — ISO 3834 is the natural extension.

Certification cycle

Companies submit a quotation request providing scope details, company characteristics, site information, outsourced processes, applicable standards and any security requirements. Initial certification spans 60 months with renewal audits thereafter, including Stage 2 audits and annual surveillance inspections.
